About Mount Kilimanjaro

Kilimanjaro is a dormant volcano in northern Tanzania near the Kenyan border. Its highest point, Uhuru Peak on the Kibo cone, stands at 5,895 metres, the highest point in Africa.

Climbers pass through distinct climate zones, from farmland and rainforest through heath and alpine desert to the glaciers near the summit, which have shrunk dramatically over the last century.

Kilimanjaro National Park was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1987. The mountain is sacred to the Chagga people who live on its slopes.
