About Mountain Gorillas of Virunga
The Virunga Massif straddles the borders of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda and Uganda. Its forested volcanoes shelter a large share of the world's mountain gorillas.
Mountain gorillas were once close to extinction. Decades of protection by rangers and local communities have helped their numbers rise to just over a thousand across the Virunga and Bwindi populations.
Virunga National Park in the DRC was founded in 1925 as Albert National Park, making it Africa's oldest national park. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1979.
